Hi its Paul from BrakeAway Bike Tours, today I’m going to show you how to balance up your ‘v-brakes’. Very common – you’ll find them on mountain bikes, you’ll find them on hybrid bikes.

So, if they go out of balance – see the way it’s pulling on the left side, but its not pulling on the right side. So, to balance these brakes what you’ll find is two little screws – one here and one on the opposite side. Now they are the adjustment screws to balance your brakes. Now what you do if you want this brake to come out you tighten this screw. So you kind of do the opposite of what you might expect would be natural. All you’re doing when tightening the screw is tensioning the spring and that should pop out – I’ll just show you.

Lets hope this works! Right, so I’ll tighten this up. Then I’ll check it. See the way its just starting to move there, so it just needs a little bit more tension and we should be good.

A little bit more and we’re there. There we go, both brakes now pulling evenly and that’s how you adjust ‘v-brakes’.
